Well, I am positive thant freshman could visit labs and learn something.
Because there is always some barriers between "ideal" and "reality".
It is not bad if freshman has such an oppertunity to know hthat before
becoming a graduate school student.
However, the basics is always the most important. It still takes time to
learn the theories. So, as my viewpoint, it is enough to know what's inside
labs and learn some experiences. It is imposible to understand everything
without any background knowledge.
As for those topics, just choose by one's own feeling or interest.
Don't try to guess which topic will be the future star. It is meaningless.
No one knows what will happen even he or she has already worked on such field
for many years, everything is just a proposal.
Just keep in mind, the most important thing is not what you know from the topic
but what you learn through the procedure.
