1. Answer the following questions. (30%)
a. Compare principle of complementary virtual work with principle of
minimum complementary energy. (8%)
b. Explain a tensor and a stress tensor. (6%)
c. Is Engesser's theorem valid for inelastic structures? Is it valid
for nonlinearly elastic structures? (8%)
d. Write the generalized Hooke's law for an isotropic material and
use it to derive. (8%)
2. Use the principle of minimum potential energy to determine nodal
displacements. It is assumed that nodal force Q(sub. 1)=P,
Q(sub. 2)=2P, L(sub. ab)=L, A(sub. ab)=A, A(sub. bc)=sqrt(2)*A,and E
is constant. (25%)
3. The cantilever beam is subjected to uniform load w(force/length) and
a concentrated load 3wL at x=L/3. A, E, and I are constant. The beam's
deflected shaped is assumed to be z(x)=a+bx+cx^2.
a. Determine this displacement function. (15%)
b. Utilize this function to compute the moment at x=L/2. (10%)
