1. (20%) A machine is shown as the picture. Rod BC is
connected to the block C through a pin and passes through
a collar welded to end B of lever AB. The block C is put
on a platform that is supported by a screw. The screw is
double-threaded and right-handed viewed from below. It
has a pitch of 1.5 mm and a mean diameter of 8 mm. A
couple of 30 N-m is applied to the lever as shown. The
hinge and the pin are frictionless. Let the coefficient of
static friction of all contacts is 0.25. The block C is about
to move downward.
(a) Draw the free body diagram of the lever AB.
(b) Draw the free body diagram of the rod BC and Block C.
(c) Determine Couple M that is required to hold the
system in equilibrium.

(a) Consider a flat belt passing over a fixed cylindrical drum. Please derive
the relation between T and T

(b) The simple band brake is constructed so that the ends of the friction
belt are connected to the pin at A and the lower lever arm at B. If the
drum is subjected to a torque of M = 120 N-m, determine the
smallest force P applied to the lever that is required to hold the drum
stationary.The coefficient of static friction between the belt and the
drum is 0.5. The pin at O is frictionless.

If the chain has weight of 0.3 kN/m along the horizontal, determine the

4. (20%) Neglect the weight of the mechanism and all frictions.
