1.A ship 75m long has half-ordinates at the load water-plane commencing
form aft as follow:
0,1,2,4,5,5,5,4,3,2 and 0 metres respectively.
The spacing between the first three and the last three semi-ordinates is half
of that between the other semi-ordinates.Calculate the area of the water-plane
,and the position of the centre of floation relative to amidships.(20%)
2.A ship is initially displacing 6650 tonnes.KG 8.40 m,KM 8.90 m.A 50 tonnes
cargo is to be discharged from a position on the centerline Kg 5.2 m using the
ships own derrick.The derrick head is 32 m above the keel.Caculate the
metacentric height(GM) when:
(a)the cargo is lifted just clear of the initial stowage position.(10%)
(b)the cargo is finally discharged ashore.(10%)
3.Derive BM=1/V
where I=The second moment of the water-plane area about the center line
V=The ship's volume of displacement(20%)
4.Will a homogeneous log of square cross-section and relative density 0.7
have a positive initial metacentric height when floating in fresh water with
one side parallel to the waterline? Verify your answer by means of a
calculation.(20%)
5.A ship of 12500 tonnes displacement,KM 7 m,KG 6.4 m,has a 3 degree list to
starboard and has yet load 500 tonnes of cargo.There is space available in
the tween decks,centres of gravity 6 m each side of the centre line.Find how
much cargo to load on each side if the ship is to complete loading upright.
