1. Describe how friendship is mentioned in Tennyson's In Memoriam, what is
particularly striking about it from today's point of view, and provide a
possible explanation for it. (5%)
2. Explain, by providing concrete illustrations from the poem, what T.S.
Eliot means when he says that In Memoriam is "religious....because of the
quality of its doubt," as well as the function of Christmas in it.
