1. True to the form of romance, Nathanial Hawthorne's stories are typically
set in the (seemingly) distant past, thought the writer inevitably handles his
material with a nineteenth-century sentiment. In what ways, then, does
Hawthorne rewrite America's colonial legacy as he represents it? Using examples
from his stories, show how Hawthorne reconsiders topics such as the Puritan
traditions, women's status, minority issues, etc., and departs from the
conventional attitudes held by his characters of an earlier era.
2. In "The Purloined Letter," Dupin uses two instances of games to illustrate
different ways of reasoning (p. 718 and p. 721). How does the idea of game
apply to the relation between the characters in the story? How about that
between the author and the reader? Can these observations be applied to Edgar
Allan Poe's other writings?
