Answer each question as to-the-point and briefly as possible.
1. Name three kinds of information that can be easily obtained from a
spectrogram. (9%)
2. Describe the source-filter model of speech analysis. What is the "source",
and what is the "filter"? Explain how the source is filtered. (15%)
3. What is "locus"? Does it exist? (8%)
4. Regarding the information we can get from a spectrogram, what varies from
speaker to speaker, and what is much the same? (15%)
5. What are logarithms useful for in phonetic analysis, and why? (8%)
6. "The acoustic structure of consonants is generally more complicated than
that of vowels." (p. 198) Why? (15%)
7. Briefly describe the difference between a wide-band and a narrow-band
spectrogram, and what purposes each might be best used for. (15%)
8. If we know in advance what sentence was read, segmenting sounds on a
spectrogram is not that difficult. But figuring out what was said just by
looking at a spectrogram is very difficult. Why? (15%)
