I. Answer the following questions in a brief paragraph each. 40%
1.The Odyssey opens with Athena determined to send Odysseus home.
Why is it that the hero should make one more stop at the Phaiakians'
instead of going straight home from Kalypso's island?
2.What does the story of the Iliad gain by ending with Hector's burial
(in Book XXIV) and not with Hector's death (in Book XXII) ? How do
the last two books add to our understanding of the heros?
II.Essay 60%
Suppose the Iliad and the Odyssey were compiled by the same poet─
call him Homer if you will--what are some of the features that show
the shaping of the same hand? On the other hand, it is very likely
that the story of the two epics had originally been told by two different
poets (or even different groups of poets) : what are some of the features
that manifiest a different outlook-- on heroism or on divine justice for
instance-- in each epic?
