1. in the sermon on the mount, Jesus proclaims that he is not come to destroy
the law, but to fulfill it:
for i say onto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter
into the kingdom of heaven. ( Matthew 5:20 )
what is the difference between the righteousness demanded of the people
and the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees?
2. Name two of the four essential differences between tragedy and comedy as
seen by Medieval readers.
3. At the highest point of the universe Dante sets his eyes on the eternal
light and notices something peculiar, which is wxplained as follows:
and not because more than one simple semblance
was in the living light at which i gazed---
for it is always what it was before---
but through my sight, which as i gazed grew stronger,
that sole appearance, even as i altered,
seemed to be changing...
( paradiso33, 109-114 )
how does this passage help explain Augustine's observation in Confession 3
that the sacred scriptures are indeed of a nature to grow in God's little
ones?

1. in book 4 of the Odyssey, Odysseus begins with his tale with a complimment
on Phaiakian minstrelsy,
"Alkinnos: king and admiration of men,
how beautiful this is, to bear a minstrel
gifted as yours: a god he might be, singing!
there is no boon in life more sweet, i say,
than when a summer joy holds all thr realm.
and banquetsers sit listening to a harper
in a great hall, by rows of tables heaped with bread and roast meat,
while a steward goes
to die up wine and brim your cups again.
here is the flower of fire, it seems to me!
but now you wish to know my cause for sorrow---
and thereby give me cause for more.
what shall i
say first? what i keep until the end?"
compare this passage with Dante's address to the reader in inferno 4 :
O you possessed of sturdy intellects,
observe the teaching that is hidden here
beneath the veil of verses so obscure.
and consider this appeal on his part in the last canto of inferno:
i did not die, and i was not alive;
think of yourself, if you have any wit,
what i became, deprived of life nd death.
Odysseus and Dante obviously have different expectation for their readers
Try to explain the major differences.
