Discuss three of the following questions.
1. King Lear is apparently a play with two plots. How skillfully
handled are the main plot(King Lear and his daughters) and the subplot
(Gloucester and his two sons)? In other words, how is the subplot directly
related to, and how does it give impetus and action to, the main action?40%
2. As a mystery play, Noah's Ark is manifestly based on Biblical history. Yet
are there incidents which deviate from the Bible? Try to show as many examples
as possible from the play, and examine each of their dramatic functions.30%
3. The Second Shepherd's Play can be divided into two parts. Part I
revolves around the episode of sheep stealing, and Part II recounts the
pilgrimage of the three shepherds to the Holy Land. Thematically,
how well are the two parts related? 30%
4. Discuss the problem of life and death in Everyman. How does Everyman
prepare himself for his pilgrimage and regain his life in death? 30%
