According to the Budapest Open Access Initiative, `“open access” in scholarly communication can be defined as follows, "By open access to this literature, we mean its free availability on the public internet, permitting any users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inseparable from gaining access to the internet itself. The only constraint on reproduction and distribution, and the only role for copyright in this domain, should be to give authors control over the integrity of their work and the right to be properly acknowledged and cited.” For your final exam, write a 6 to 8 pages essay that, 1. Explain the main thrust behind the “open access” movement; 2. Give an introduction to the various initiatives within the movement (e.g. electronic journal reform movement, open access journals and open access archives etc.). Compare their approaches to access provision. 3. Give your assessment of the movement’s potentials to change the economic dynamics and communicative practices of scholarly communication (e.g. by taking into account the disciplinary differences and scholars’ information seeking behaviors). 4. Comment on its implications on libraries’ role in the selection, preservation and organization of scholarly literature. You can quote or translate texts either from the assigned readings or other sources to support your arguments. Extra credits will be given to those who further their research beyond the course materials. Make proper references to the sources you cite. Final exam will account for 30% of your grade. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.112.193.72
