1. The Latimer diagram of the oxidation/reduction of Mn in acidic condition
is shown below:

Calculate the reduction potential Mn3+ --> Mn and plot the Forst diagram
under both neutral and basic condition fo Mn.
2. The boiling points of methanol and cyclohexane are 64.7 and 80.7 ℃ and
their heats of vaporization are 34.9 and 30.1 kJ/mol, respectiviely.
Determine the entropy of vaporiztion for these liquid and explain the
differece between them.
3. The bond angles for OF2 and H20 are 103° and 104.5°, respectiviely.
The dipole moments are 0.30 D and 1.85 D, respectively. Explain the factors
that cause such a large difference in the dipole moments of the molecules.
4. Ammonium chloride is observed to undergo abrupt change in heat capacity at
some temperature below the melting point. Describe the processes likely
responsible for these observations.
5. The length of the edge of the unit cell for Na2O, which has the antifluori
-te structure, is 555 pm. For Na20, determine the following: (a) The minim
-um distance between Na ions. (b) The minimum distance between oxide ions.
(c) The minimum distance between Na and oxide ions. (Note:Fluorite strcture
of CaF2 is a fcc arrangement of Ca with complete filled tetrahedral hole by
F)
6. Explain why there are no hydride complexes of the type Co(NH3)5H+, but ther
-e are some like Mn(CO)5H.
7. The radi of Li+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions are 60, 65 and 94 pm, respectively. The
hydration number of Li+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions are 5, 10 and 7 approximately,
explain.
8. Acetic anhydride is assumed to undergo slight autoionization. (a) Write the
equation to represent the autoionization process. (b) What is one substance
that would be acidic in this solvent? (c) What is one substance that would
be basic in this solvent? (d) Write the equation to show the amphoteric beh
-avior of Zn2+ in liquid acetic anhydride.
9. Tetrahedral hole is formed when four sphere of radius r are in contact and
are placed ate alternate corners of a cube. The holeis insied the middle of
cube. Find the length of the body diagoanl of this cube and the cube and
the radius of the tetrahedral hole.
10.Arrange and explain the relative acidity of the following acids: H2SO4,
HSO3F, HSO3F + SbF5 and draw their structures.
