“Thailand and its ASEAN neighbors should consider future development
strategies knowing they stand between the developed economies of the US,
Europe and Japan on one hand, and fast-emerging economic giants including
China, India and Russia on the other, according to Commerce Minister
Thanong Bidaya. Dr Thanong said two economic power groups would dominate
the world economy, with the US, EU and Japan leading in innovation and
technology, compared with rapid growth and industrialization in China,
India and Russia. ASEAN, caught in the center, ‘needs to find ways to
live with the two economic groups, with an aim of finding a balance
between the economic powers,’ he said” (“Competing systems provide
new Thai trade challenges,” Bangkok Post, June 10, 2005)
Discuss ASEAN countries’ effort to increase intra-regional trade and
economic cooperation on one hand, and develop strategies and policies
to cope with the competing systems between the two economic power groups.
