(1) John only buys X and Y. X costs $0.6 each, and Y costs $12 each. He has
$18 per week to spend on these two goods. If John is maximizing his
utility, his marginal rate of substitution is________
(2) Carl only buys X and Y. X costs $5 each, and Y costs $10 each. When
Carl maxmizes his utility, his marginal utility from X is 8 units. His
marginal utility from Y is therefore______units.
(3) Sam chooses to spend his entire income on X and buys no Y. His

3. There are two people with identical individual demand curves for X each

is normal and Y is inferior goods? How about the price-consumption curve

(2) With only two goods, can both goods be inferior in the same range? Why
or why not?(5%)
5. Mary participates in the food stamp program, currently receives $100 a
month in food stamps, and has a cash income of $500 per month. If the food
stamp program is replaced by a cash grant program paying Mary $100 per
month. Will Mary buy more or fewer other goods? Draw a graph and explain.
