1.John's demand for electricity of demand is given by Q=2,000-100P
(1) Calculate John's price elasticity of demand at the points P=9, P=10, and
P=11.(10%)
(2) If costs were zero and the price were currently set at P=9, would you
advise the local electric utility company to raise or lower the price
in order to increase its revenue?(10%)
(3) Many local electric utilities charge a higher rate for large quantities
consumed per month in order to encourage conservation. Suppose P=10 for
the first 200 units consumed per month and P=15 for all remaining units
demanded. Calculate John's consumer surplus. Show the surplus on your
graph.(20%)
2.An increased tax on movie theater tickets causes Zach's consumption of
popcorn to decrease, but leaves his consumption of movies unchanged. How
can this be? Explain using a graph and the concepts of income and
substitution effects.(30%)
3.A student has an income of $100 and buys only two goods, pizza and books.
Pizza costs $6 a slice and books cost $10 each. At the student's present
level of consumption, his marginal utility of pizza is MUp=2 and his
marginal utility of books is MUb=4. Is this student currently in consumer
equilibrium? If he is not in equilibrium, show on your graph how this
student could obtain his equilibrium?
