Hellenistic philosophy exhibits two trends that ran almost parallel
throughout the civilization. The major trend, exemplified by Stoicism
Epicureanism, showed a fundamental regard for reason as the key to the
solution of human problems ... The minor trend, exemplified by the Cynics,
Skeptics, and various Asian cults,tended in some cases to turn toward
mysticism and reliance upon faith.
2.Tacitus在他的Annals中對於Augustus的政權有這段分析:
The most outspoken{potential adversaries} had fallen in civil war or through
proscription, whilst the rest of the nobility, the readier they were to
