Chinese - English Translation & Interpretation Program
Admission Exam - Written Test
Date: August 21, 2012

1. Everyone knows that preventive medicine is generally more cost-effective--
for both individuals and society--than our current remedial approach.
Prevention means getting health exams on a regular basis, before problems
develop. But having a colonoscopy is an ordeal. Even a cholesterol check,
which requires blood to be drawn, is unpleasant. So while our long-term
health and longevity depend on undergoing such tests, in the short term we
procrastinate and procrastinate and procrastinate. But can you imagine if we
all got the required health exams on time? Think how many health problems
could be caught if they were diagnosed early. Think how much cost could be
cut from health-care spending, and how much misery would be saved in the
process.
(按:倒數第二行的"health-care"我記得試題本上是寫"health-case",也有可能是我眼
花不過 I hope not ˊ_>ˋ)

2. The eggs started smashing against the Apple Store windows just before dawn.
Most of the hundreds of people who swarmed the swank plaza adjacent to the
glowing, glass-cube outlet had huddled all night long in Beijing’s frigid
January temperatures. But these weren’t early adopters desperate for the newly
released iPhone 4S. Nor were they citizens outraged at the labor conditions
inside the Chinese factories that churn out Apple gadgets. Instead, most were
rural migrants who had been paid about $15 each to purchase iPhones and then
hand them over to scalpers who would sell them at inflated price.

By Robin Young
The Times - IlingaIlunga came top of a list drawn up with the help of 1,000
translators, narrowly beating shlimazl, Yiddish for a chronically unlucky
person, and radioustukacz, Polish for a person who worked as a telegraphist
for the resistance movements on the Soviet side of the iron Curtain.
In the English language, googly (as in cricket), Spam (as in tins) and
gobbledegook (as in Plain English Campaign press releases) were among the
most untranslatable words, but the top place was, surprisingly, reserved for
plenipotentiary.
No problem for classicists there surely? It means a special ambassador or
envoy, invested with full powers. Next!
Whimsy, bumf and serendipity (the faculty of making happy and unexpected
discoveries by accident), poppycock (which is what you may consider all this),
chuffed (which is what I am to be writing it) and kitsch (oh, you know) were
other English words to make the Top Ten.
"My own vote would have gone to googly" said Jurga Zilinskiene, the managing
director of Today Translations, which organised the survey. "People sometimes
forget that an interpreter must translate not just from one language to another
but from one culture to another." A googly, for any Anglophones still in doubt,
is an off-breaking ball in cricket bowled with an apparent leg-break action on
the part of the bowler. Howz at ?!?
Today asked its linguists to vote for the most untranslatable word in languages
other than English, which is where ilunga narrowly outpointed shlimazl and
radioustukacz.
Linguists taking part in the poll were native speakers of languages ranging
from English and French to Turkish, Ukrainian, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, Amharic
and many others.
