Excerpt 1
Work and movement/section: Don Giovanni, K.527, Please, come this way
Question:How does this music express a conflict among different social classes?
Possible answer:
The use of polymeter (multiple, simultaneous meters) combines three types of
dances: a 3/4 minuet which is an aristocratic dance, a 2/4 contredanse which is
a middling dance, and a 3/8 Deutsch which is a peasant dance.
Excerpt 2
Work and movement/section: Die Zauberflote, K.620,
Oh, do not tremble, my dear son
Question: How does this music express an ironic message?
Possible answer:
Die Zauberflote is Singspiel, where recitatives were supposed to be completely
spoken and without that much richness of Italian opera. However the Queen of
the Night performs ridiculously high notes and long melismas, which are the
elements of opera seria. It is especially ironic for an old-fashioned style
such as opera seria to appear in a modern context like Singspiel.
Excerpt 3
Work and movement/section: Cosi fan tutte, K.588, Gentle be the breeze
Question: How does this music express an ironic message, and at the same time
possilbly also challenge this message?
Possible answer:
Musical beauty is a universal idea and convention in the 18th century Viennese
opera buffa, and it usually includes the conflict between truth and appearance
in the illusion ir created. Most of the time the illusion is destructed with a
concluding fast passage, but in this excerpt there is no desctruction at all;
rather, Don Alfonso sings with the women. This implies the potential
equivalence of truth and beauty, contradicting the idea of good appearance not
meaning what they seemed to mean.
