1. A stone is thrown from the top of a building upward at an angle of 45.0°
to the horizontal with an initial speedof 20.0 m/s. If the height of the
building is 45.0 m.
(a) How long does it take the stone to reach the ground?
(b) What is the speed of the stone just before it strikes the ground?
2. A cord hold a 15 Kg block on a frictionless plane inclined at an angle
30.0°. What are the magnitudes of the tension T on the cord and the normal
force Fn on the block from the plane?
3. A slab of mass m1 = 40 Kg rests on a frictionless floor, and a block of
mass m2 = 10 Kg rests on the top of the slab. Between the block and the
slab, the coefficient of static friction is 0.50, and the coefficient of
kinetic friction is 0.40. The block is pulled by a horizontal force F of
magnitude 100 N. In unit-vector notation, what are the resulting accelera-
tion of the block and the slab?
4. The only force acting on a 2.0 Kg body as it moves along a positive x axis
has an x component Fx=-4x^2 N, with x in meters. The velocity of the body
at x = 3.0 m is 8.0 m/s. What is the velocity of the body at x = 5.0 m?
5. A food shipper pushes a wood crate of cabbage heads (total mass m = 14 Kg)
across a concrete floor with a constant horizontal force F of magnitude 40
N. In a straight-line displacement of magnitude d = 0.5 m the speed of the
crate decreases from v0 = 0.6 m/s to v = 0.2 m/s.What is the increase ΔEth
in the thermal energy of the crate and the floor?
6. A 20.0 Kg body is moving through space in positive direction of an x axis
with a speed of 200 m/s when, due to an internal explostion, it breaks
into three parts. One part, with a mass of 10.0 Kg, moves away from the
point explosion with a speed of 100 m/s in the y direction. A second of
500 m/s.How much energy is released in the explosion? Ignore effects due
to gravitational force.
7. A solid sphere of mass M and radius R has a density of ρ for r ≦ 1/2 R
and 2ρ for 1/2 R ≦ r ≦ R. Calculate the moment of inertia I about any
diameter.
8. A uniform disk, with mass M = 2.5 Kg and radius R = 20 cm, mounted on a
fixed horizontal axle. A block with mass m = 1.2 Kg hangs from a massless
cord that is wrapped around the rim of the disk. Find the acceleration of
the falling block and the tension in the rod. The cord does not slip, and
there is no friction in the axle.
9. A uniform solid sphere, of mass M = 6.00 Kg, and radius R, rolls smoothly
from rest down a ramp at angle θ= 30.0°. The cylinder descends a vertical
height h = 1.20 m to the bottom of the ramp.
(a) What is its speed at the bottom?
(b) What is the magnitude of the frictional force on the ball as it rolls
down the ramp?
10. A small 50 g block slides down a frictionless surface through height
h = 20 cm and then sticks to a uniform rod of mass 100 g and length 40 cm.
The rod pivots about point O through angle θ before mormentarily stopping.
What is the value of θ?
