3.Consider an electri dipole, with moment p along positive z direction, at the
origin. What is the electric field at (0, 0, z), and (x, 0, 0)? Please
specify both the magnitude and direction.(10%)
4.Dipole layer can be used to modify the work function of a metal surface.
Consider a metallic sphere of radius R, coated with one molecular layer such
that electrons are transferred from metal to molecules a little bit. Assume the
total charge transferred is Q and the effective separation between the
bi-layer is d, how much will the work function of the metal surface be
modified?(15%)
5.Consider an irregular metal surface. Please explain why the surface with
smaller radius of curvature has larger electric field nearby.(10%)
6.A particle of rest mass m0 approaches head-on another particle of mass m0,
each moving with velocity 3c/4. Calculate (a) the relativistic velocity, (b)
the relativistic mass of each particle with respect to each other.(20%)
7.Show that the relativistic momentum of a particle may be written as p=
[(2E0K+K^2)^1/2]/c.
What is the value of p for (a) β→0, (b) β→1?(20%)
