2.LiI(s) has a heat of formation of -272kJ/mol and a lattice energy of
-753kJ/mol. The ionization energy of Li(s) is 520kJ/mol, the bond energy of
I2(s) is 151kJ/mol, and the electron affinity of I(g) is -295kJ/mol. Use
these data to determine the heat of sublimation of Li(s). (5%)
3.In valence bond theory, the linear combinations of the 2s and 2p orbitals
gives four sp3 hybrid orbitals, as

(i)Assume the five hydrogen atoms in the benzene ring are equivalent with no
spin-spin coupling.

(c)The microwave sspectrum of H(1)Cl(35) shows that the transition from J = 0
to J = 1 requires electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength of
4.85×(10^-4)m. Calculate the bond length of the HCl molecule. (The masses
of H(1) and Cl(35) are 1.0078amu and 34.9689amu, respectively.) (5%)

7.Amino acids can act as ligands toward transition metal ions. The simplest
amino acid is glycine NH2CH2CO2H.
(a)Draw a structure of the glycinate anion, (NH2CH2CO2)-, acting as a bidentate

(b)Draw the structural isomers of the square planar complex Cu(NH2CH2CO2)2.

8.Draw all the geometrical isomers of Pt(CN)2Br2(H2O)2. Which of these isomers

9.The complex ion (PdCl4)2- can be tetrahedral or square planar.
(a)Draw the crystal field diagram of (PdCl4)2- for each of the two possible
structures. (6%)
(b)Predict the magnetic property (paramagnetic or diamagnetic) of (PdCl4)2-
for each of the two possible structures. (2%)
(c)We know (PdCl4)2- is diamagnetic. What is the structure for (PdCl4)2-? (2%)
