（一）第一範疇：希臘至亞歷山大時代

１. 請解釋什麼是希臘文Arete之意？它與荷馬史詩所談的英雄人物，奧林匹克運動
會的興起，和雅典城邦民主政治，有什麼關聯（解釋名詞10分，申論15分）
２. 請問從希臘時代到希臘化時代，希臘文化的重要遺產，就你所學有哪些？
（可分述其重要性，並請務必避免毫無說明的條例）
（二）第二範疇：羅馬時代
以下３至４題，必選一題
３. 請就此學期所學，討論羅馬時代的重要性？請試把希臘及羅馬時代作一比較，
並申論。
４. 安東尼.派格登的<<西方帝國簡史>>一書中，對羅馬帝國其「帝國性」的討論，
是在於其「文明化」生活方式的提供（頁４９）。請問從英文教科書的哪些討
論中，你可以申論此點（例如奧古斯都、龐貝、或日爾曼民族的轉化等方面；
15分）？你覺得「文明化」是否就一定是正面的意義？請先翻譯以下這段課文
論述，再行申論（10分）：
Hunt, The Making of the West, p.4:
Technically, a study of the history of Western civilization focuses
on the peoples living on and near the continent of Europe from
ancient to modern times, beginning with the history of Sumer in
Mesopotamia and of Egypt in Africa. In practice, the historical idea
of Western civilization mixes together three ambiguous topics: the
contested historical concept of civilization, the geographic notion
of the West, and -- most controversial of all-- the value of Western
culture (that is, the West's particular ways of life and ideas).
（三）第三範疇：基督教

５. 上課所觀賞的兩部影片片段，<<耶穌的對手>>和<<猶大福音>>，對了解傳統基督
較起源及發展的歷史建構，有什麼幫助（12分）？並請討論早期基督教在羅馬帝國
的階段，有哪些重要的發展（重要性指對往後基督教世界的形成有意義；13分）
６. 在中古基督教世界的十字軍東征，猶太人被牽扯其中的主要因素為何（12分）？
並請論述猶太人在中古社會被邊緣化的情形，以及猶太人屠殺告訴我們如何的基督
教教會（13分）？
（四）第四範疇：中古時代
以下７至８題，必選一題
７. 希臘羅馬古典傳統的繼承者（文明或政治實體，非各別人物）共同開創了中古時代
，請問他們為何（6分）？在中古初期，他們最明顯的一項共同特點為何（6分）？
並請討論中古是黑暗時代或不是的說法（請參考在 The Making of the West 的
286頁，對 "Medieval" 一詞的討論，以及馬伊的<<人人必讀的世界史>>，頁72至
73；13分）
８. 請具體詳論「封建制度」(feudalism)一詞問題何在？請先翻譯下面這段文字，再
進行申論（翻譯10分，申論15分）
Hunt, The Making of the West, p343:
...all these views...have one thing in common: a stress on vertical
hierarchies, such as lords over peasants or kings over their subjects.
Some recent historians, however, point out that not all of medieval
society was hierarchical. Horizontal relations -- such as those that
created peasant communities, urban corporations, and the comradeship
of knightly troops -- were equally, if not more, important.
