Answer 6 out of the following 7 questions, each of which will account for 5
points of your final grade.
1. What are the three major dimensions of indexing and how might they impact
retrieval effectiveness?
2. Define "R-about" proposed by Maron; explain how it is related to
"user-oriented" indexing,
3. What might have caused "large retrieval phenomenon" when searching with
OPAC(Lancaster); and when searching with WWW search engines ? How can it be
allevited in either situation ?
4. Salton stated that TF takes care of recall function (representation), and
IDF precision (discrimination) function, how is that ? (hint: you might
want to start with the relationship between TF and exhaustivity, and that
between IDF and specificity).
5. Explain Panofsky's iconography and how it is related to image indexing.
6. How does automatic compare to human indexing in terms of retrieval
performance ? Specifically, what characteristics associated with each
indexing method might affect recall and precision ? (Hint, redundancy;
spurious relationship; synonymy, etc).
7. Explain automatic indexing procedures.
