1. In a scene toward the end "The Birth Mark," the protagonist gazes at the
blemish on Georgiana's cheek with a shudder, then suddenly kisses it while
inwardly recoiling at the act(642). How does this act illustrate the theme
of the story? Do you detect the same theme in any of Hawthorne's other tales?
How does he treat it similarly or differently?
2. In view of Edgar Allan Poe's explanation of how he wrote "The Raven" in "The
Philosophy of Composition," how do you imagine he went about writing "The
Fall of the House of Usher"? What were probably his concerens as he started
out to write it and how did he make decisions?
3. Melville's "Bartley, the Scrivener," though professedly a story about the
title character, also reveals much about the narrator. What do we learn
about the speaker of the story? Why does the narrator tell the story? (i.e.
What does the story mean to the narrator?)
