Provincials paid heed to the English upper classes in their town and
country houses, parading the streets, or posing in public places because
so much power was focused in their persons. Their conspicuous wealth, their
offices, their acknowledged eminence in society made them fascinating.

power to confirm identity. They determined who and what was worthy.

values of genteel culture and drove the emulative impulse. When gentility was
transferred to America, it was the culture of the gentry, the classes who
combined the greatest wealth, political authority, and social prominence.
Gentility was always most fully realized at the pinnacles of power.
