Consider the following information and Stanley's use of the political slogan in A Streetcar Named Desire (p.1186). How does this reference add to your understanding of Stanley's character and of the conflicts of the play? (30%) Information: Huey Long (1893-1935) was the Governor of Louisiana and a U.S. Senator. He created the "Share Our Wealth" program in 1934, with the motto "Every Man a King," proposing a new wealth redistribution measures in the form of a net asset tax on large corporations and individuals of great wealth to curb the poverty and crime resulting from the Great Depression. Denying that his program was socialist, Long stated that his ideological inspiration for the plan came not from Karl Marx but from the Bible and the Declaration of Independence. 2. Explain the significance of the character Ben in Death of a Salesman - considering, especially, what he means to Willy and to the audience respectively, and how the playwright uses him as a dramatic device.
