Final Exam
You have to provide explanations for all of your answer.
1. Consider the demand and supply of an economics class. For simplicity, assume
that the only cost of providing the class is the cost of your professor. The
marginal cost incurred by your professor is an increasing function of the
number of students in the class. Your tuition is a fixed amount regardless
which courses you take. You do not need to pay an additional fee to attend
this economics class.
(a)(10%) Analyze the social gain and deadweight loss in this market.
(b)(10%) Suppose your professor imposes an upper bound on the number of
student in the class. When there is excess demand, the class openings
are randomly assigned by a computer to students who have registered.
Student cannot transfer the class openings to others. How does this
policy change your analysis in part(a)?
(c)(5%) Instead of distributing the class openings randomly by a computer,
your professor sells these openings to students for a price. What is the
social gain in the market? How to determine the price of these openings?
2. You are going to buy a video game console Wii from an online store. There
are two types of online store: honest stores and dishonest stores. Everyone
Knows that 60% of online stores are honest, while others are dishonest.
Honest stores sell you a new console, but dishonest stores sell you a used
console. As a result, you are willing to pay $9,000 for a purchase from an
honest store, but to pay only $5,000 from a dishonest store. Honest store
are willing to sell a Wii fir $8,000. Dishonest stores are willing to sell
for $4,000.
(a)(10%) If you can tell the type of a store, will you make a purchase? If
you will, which type of the store(s) will you purchase?
(b)(10%) If you cannot tell the type of a store, how will your answers in
part(a) change?
(c)(5%) Suppose that store can provide a warranty such that if you receive a
used console from the sale, the store will compensate you x dollars.
Determone the values of x which can eliminate the problem caused by
asymmetric infomation.
3. Suppose your utility funtion is u(x1,x2)=x1^2x2. Your income is $60 per
mounth. The price of food(x1)increases from $2 to $4 this month because of
bad weather. The price of closing(x2) is unchange at $3.
(a)(10%) How much does your consumer surplus change due to the bad weather?
(b)(10%) Suppose the government wants to give you a cash subsidy to fully
compensate your loss due to the bad weather. How much does the government
need to give you?
4. Aproduct X is provide by a competitive constant-cost industry where firm has
fixed costs of $400. The variable cost of a typical firm is VC(q)= 25q^2.
The industry-wide demand is D(p)= 1960 - 4.8p.
(a)(5%) What is the price of X?
(b)(3%) How many firms are in the industry?
For the remaining seven parts of this problem, suppose the government gives
a special subsidy to 40 firms in the industry. The variable cost of the
subsidized firms become VCs(q)= 20q^2. Other firm do not receive any subside
from the government, and the cost funtion remains the same as before.
(c)(5%) In the short run, what is the new price of X?
(d)(2%) In the short run, how much does a subsidized firm earn?
(e)(2%) In the short run, how much does an un-subsidized firm earn?
(f)(5%) In the long run, what is the new price of X?
(g)(2%) In the long run, how many firms are in the industry?
(h)(3%) In the long run, how much does a subsidized firm earn?
(i)(3%) Inthe long run, how much does an un-subsidized firm earn?
