Essay Questions.
Discuss any 3 of the following questions.
1."Knives"and "flowers" are two of the most striking images in Blood Wedding
by Garcia Lorca. How are they related to "blood" and "wedding" respectively?
And how each of them eventially plays a leading role in the structure of the
play?
2.Read the following dialogue carefully, and then discuss the existential
difference between"what one wills," and "what one does."
Garcin: I "dreamt," you say. It was no dream. When I chose the hardest
path, I made my choice deliberately. A man is what he wills
himself to be.
Inez: Prove it. Prove it was no dream. It's what one does, and nothing
else, that shows the stuff one's made of.
3.Discuss the reality of our daily life as reflected in The Bald Soprano by
Eugene Ionesco. How futile is the meaningful communication in modern
society? And how our life is turned into chaos through the decay of
language?
4.In The Good Woman of Setzuan, one of the gods defines "a good person" as
one who "can be good and stay good." What does he mean by "good"? By what
means can one hopefully "stay good"? Be a bad man once a month whose
cromes everyone condemns adn at the same time a good woman most of the time
whose good deeds everyone praises? try your best to clarify your position
by drawing examples from the play for illustration.
