Answer the following questions with short essays whose lengths
are proportionate to their grade allotments.
1. What is the significance of Robert Burns? (5%)
2. Summarize the characteristics of Romanticism as a reaction to the
Enlightment, especially the Romantic critique of "Deism", its own espousal
of the "poetic genius", and what seems like "pantheism." (10%)
3. Answer one of the following two questions: (10%)
(1) Characterize William Blake's moral philosophy as reflected in his
miscellaneous poems (i.e. those on in pairs) in "Songs of Innocence and
Experience" as well as the "Proverbs of Hell" in "The Marriage of Heaven
and Hell." or
(2) Describe the essence of Blake's "diabolical" stance in "The Marriage
of Heaven and Hell."
4. Pinpoint the Enlightment influence in Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication
of the Rights of Women," name one rhetorical strategy she uses to persuade
men, and one that may be found problematic by today's feminism. (10%)
5. What are the symbolic meanings of the two literal journeys across Simplon
Pass and atop Mount Snowdon as described in Wordsworth's "The Prelude." (10%)
6. Explain the following two passages from Wordsworth's "Ode: Intimantions
of Immortality":
(1) Thou, whose exterior semblance doth belie/ Thy Soul's immensity;/
Thou best Philosopher, who yet dost keep/ Thy beritage, thou Eye among the
blind,/ That, deaf and silent, read'st the eternal deep,/ Haunted for ever
by the eternal mind, ---
(2) Hence in a season of calm weather/ Though in a season of calm weather/
Though inland far we be,/ Our Souls have sight of that immortal sea,/
Which brought us hither,/ Can in moment travel hither,/ And see the Children
sport upon the shore,/ And hear the mighty waters, rolling evermore;
and then the poem "My Heart Leaps Up," especially its meantioning of
"rainbow," "natural piety," and the famous line "The Child is the father
of the Man." (15%)
7. Describe Blake's view on "the two contrary states of the human soul" by
discussing the three following pairs of poems in "Songs of Innocence and
Experiences": "The Lamb"/"The Tyger," "The Chimney Sweeper," and "Holy
Thursday." (20%)
8. Explain the Romantic philosophy about Nature, the human mind, memory, and
the poet as manifest in Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey" (which should occupy
half of the focus here) and Coleridge's "The Eolian Harp" and "This Lime-
Tree Bower My Prison." (20%)
