試題 :
1. There are two kinds of setting which should be noticed whenever reading
fiction. What are they? Use Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown"
as an example to demonstrate how a knowledge of them could be helpful or
even indispensable for a proper understanding of a work of fiction.(10%)
2. According to the definition provided by the "Glossary" at the end of our
textbook, theme is "a generalized, abstract paraphrase of the inferred
central or dominant idea or concern of a work." Please follow this
definition and discuss the "theme" of ONE of the following three stories:
Edith Wharton, "Roman Fever"
Ernest Hemingway, "Hill Like White Elephants"
Ann Beattie, "Janus"
Be sure you not just state what its theme is but also illustrate it with
concrete details of the story.(10%)
3. Summarize the hunger artist's thoughts, especially when they turn out to
be the opposites of what we expected, in Franz Kafka's "A Hunger Artist."
(10%)
4. Explain why Kafka's "A Hunger Artist" has been widely read as a symbolic
story and conduct such a reading of the story yourself.(10%)
5. Summarize Flannery O'Conner's story "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and
discuss how "irony" may be the most useful concept in analyzing it.(10%)
6. Relate O'Conner's story "Everything That Rises Must Converge" to the
American South, analyze the narrator's attitude towards the two major
characters, and explain what you think the title means.(10%)
7. Explain how the idea of the author can help us better understand literary
works by using the above mentioned two stories by Flannery O'Conner as
illustrations ( be sure to provide concrete examples). Also explain what
the seemingly contradictory concept of "the death of the author" mean.(15%)
8. Name another author whom you find interesting through assigned readings of
our textbook and tell what you have found about her/him.(5%)
9. Explain what an allegory is and read Nathaniel Howthorne's "Young Goodman
Brown" as one; pay special attention to its ending and explain how that
may decide our interpretation of the whole stroy.(15%)
10. First describe the basic situation and major characters in Charlotte
Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper." Then discuss its narrating point
of view and how we should react to the story accordingly. Finally, explain
what you think the story is really about, especially with reference to
the yellow wallpaper.(15%)
