1. Define "metafiction" by using the film "Stranger than Fiction" as
illustration and analyze the theme of the film accordingly.(5%)
2. Explain the meaning of the following passage and point out its significance
for the whole story:(5%)
The higher intellect, the imagination, the spirit, and even the heart might
all find their congenial aliment in pursuits which, as some of their ardent
votaries believed, would ascend from one step of powerful intelligence to
another, until the philosopher should lay his hand on the secret of creative
force and perhaps make new worlds for himself.
3. Explain the meaning of the following passage and point out its significance
for the whole story:(5%)
She considered the character of Aylmer, and did it completer justice than
at any previous moment. Her heart exulted, while it trembled, at his
honorable love—so pure and lofty that it would accept nothing less than
perfection, nor miserably make itself contented with an earthlier nature than
the meaner kind which would have borne with the imperfection for her sake,
and have been guilty of treason to holy love by degrading its perfect idea to
the level of the actual.
4. Explain what "allegory" is by using Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birth-Mark"
as illustration (be sure to include as many cases of symbolism in the story
as possible) and analyze the theme of the story accordingly.(10%)
5. Explain why "The Birth-Mark" should be read as an allegorical/symbolic story
rather than literally, as a realistic one.(5%)
6. Give a detailed summary of the plot of Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is
Hard To Find" and "Everything That Rises Must Converge."(15%)
7. Identify the characteristics evidently shared by these two stories of
O'Connor's and try to link them with our biographical knowledge about her.
(10%)
8. What contexual information is crucial for understanding these two stories
by O'Connor? (5%)
9. Name one author (except for Flannery O'Connor) whose work has been covered
in class and you find impressive. First briefly explain why you are
impressed you and then tell what you have found out about its author.(5%)
10. Analyze the plot structure and point of view (both "voice" and "focus") of
Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" and explain their effects.(10%)
11. Identify the characteristics shared by Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The
Yellow Wallpaper," Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," as well as Susan
Glaspell's "A Jury of Her Peers," and give an explanation for it(i.e. their
sharing certain characteristics). (10%)
12. Summarize the plot of Glaspell's story "A Jury of Her Peers" as well as
her play "Trifles", explain their respective titles, and link the latter to
their common theme. (10%)
13. Define "situational irony" and "dramatic irony" by using the stories
covered in class after ther mid-term as illustration (one for each will do
but be sure to summarize the plot relevant to it). (5%)
14. Compare the above two works by Susan Glaspell to show the generic (i.e. in
terms of genres) similarities and differences between fiction and drama.(10%)

後記:考完第一次期中考後,對於這一次的期末考沒有太多驚訝,就是很老師的出題風格XD;
在期末考前一週老師發還期中考卷給大家,並稍加檢討.提點每一題該寫到的Point,老
師覺得大家考得不夠好,所以分數會開根號再乘以10來做調整;此外,老師希望大家不
要放棄,來不及讀完小說時可以找中譯本來看之類的(不太建議);考Passage主要就是
上課花比較多時間講,大家可能會比較不懂的段落;最後,第一學期結束啦!!
