1.(a) Derive the inertia of a solid sphere. (5%)
(b) Derive the inertia of a hollow sphere. (5%)
2. The x-component of the initial velocity of particle 1 is 25m/s, and that
of particle 2 is -25m/s. The mass of these two particle is identicle.
Assume the collision coefficient is 0.7, find the final velocity of
particle 1 and 2. (5%,5%)
3. A rocket whose initial mass Mi is 850kg comsumes fuel at the rate R =
2.3kg/s The speed u of the exhaust gases relative to the rocket engine
is 3000m/s. (a) What thrust does the rocket engine provide; (b) What is
the initial acceleration of the rocket; and (c) What is its final speed
when its fuel is exhausted down to 250 kg? (3%,2%,5%)
4. A ball with mass m is lauched vertically from the ground with an innitial
velocity V. Consider the air friction is proportional to the velocity
square(f = μv^2). Find the velocity of this ball when it hits back to
the ground again. (10%)
5. (a) Describe Newton's 1st law in English. (5%)
(b) Describe the properties of the conservative force in details. (5%)
6. The potential energy of a diatomic molecule is given by
U = A/r^12-B/r^6
where r is the two atoms of the molecule and A and B are positive
constants. This potential energy is associated with the force that
binds the two atoms together.
(a)Find the equilibrium separation. Is the force repulsive or attrative
if their separation is (b) smaller and (c) larger than the equilibrium
separation? (6%,2%,2%)
7. A 1.5kg block is initially at rest on a horizontal frictionless surface
when a horizontal force along an x axis is applied to the block. The force
is given by F(x) = (2.5-x^2)i N, where x is in meters and the initial
position of the block is x = 0.
(a) What is the kinetic energy of the block as it passes through x =2.0m?
(b) What is the maximum kinetic energy of the block between x = 0 and
x = 2.0 m? (5%,5%)
8. Figure 1 shows a amn sitting in a boson chair that dangles from a massless
rope, which runs over a massless, frictionless pulley and back down to the
man's hand. The combined mass of man and chair is 95.0kg. With what force
magnitude must the man pull on the rope if he is to rise (a) with a con-
-stant velocity and (b) with an upward acceleration of 1.30 m/s^2? (5%,5%)
9. In Fig.2, a ball is launched with a velocity of magnitude 10.0m/s, at an
angle of 50.0°to the horizontal. The launch point is at the base of a
ramp of horizontal length d 1 = 6.0m and d 2 = 3.6m. A pleateau is located
at the top of the ramp.
(a) Does the ball land on the ramp or pleateau? When it lands, what are the
(b) magnitude and (c) angle of its displacement from the launch point?

10. Four bricks of length L, identical and uniform, are stacked on top of one
another (see Fig.3) in such a way that part of each extends beyond the one
beneath. Find, in terms of L, the maximum values of (a)a 1 (b)a 2 (c)a 3
(d)a 4 and (e) h, such that the stack is in equilibrium. (2% for each)
