18.2-naphthol (1.44 mg) was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (1.0 L), and the
absorbance at absorption maximum (wavelengt max=330nm)was 0.20.The quantum
yield of Coumarin-1 is 0.99 in tetrahydrofuran, and this reference
compound was utilized to estimate the quantum yield of 2-naphthol in which
the quantum yield was considered to be similar with naphthalene. At 340nm
wavelength, both of naphthalene and reference compound have the same
absorbance of 0.19, and the corresponding emission spectra(excitation at
340nm )of thesis two compounds show integral intensities to be 800 for
2-naphthol and 2400 for coumarin-1. Besides, the rate of fluorescence for
naphthalene was measured to be 1*10^-7 s^-1 . 4-(dimethylamino) benzoic
acid was added into the solution, and the esterification reaction took
place as shown in Scheme 1. The absorbance of 2-naphthol at 330nm
decreased with reaction time. The results are shown in Table 1.Finally, the
quantum yield of the naphthalene moiety was measured to be 0.1 . It seems
likely that electron transfer occurred in the final product.
