they might not be completely correct.You can send me emails

1.) (20 points) Redo example 3.7(p.136) of the text book but with different
initial condition: x(t=0)=0 and dx/dt(t=0)=-F0/(mω1). (This is to test whether
you understand what initial conditions do.)
2.) (20 points) Try to understand Figure 4-14,4-15 and 4-16 by solving the
equation m(d^2x/dt^2)=-γ(dx/dt)+F(x)+F0cos(ωt),with F(x) defined in Eq.(4.37)
(This is to test whether you can find your own answers using mathematica.)
3.) (30 points) Write an essay(in English,typed,less than 3 pages) about the
magnificent Taipei 101 damper.Explain the physics behind it. Make a theoretical
model(and solve it,using mathematica is OK) to explain how it works.(Try to
start from a simple model with a single oscillator then make it more
complicated later on.It is interesting that somehow talking about the 728 ton
steel ball(the damper) is more impressive than the single pendulum or spring
in our class...)
4.) (30 points)Write an essay(in English,typed,less than 3 pages) to summarize
the current status of the field of chaos and non-linear dynamics,or you can
just write about something cool in chaos.(This is to see how far you can go in
one to two weeks... You will be surprised by the result.)
