Ⅰ.Stop passages. Answer the following questions by means of a few sentences.
Except for cases of identification, complete sentences are still necessary.

1."Outside the family circle, papa, I am glad to say, is entirely unknown.
I think that is quite as it should be. The home seems to me to be the
proper sphere for man. And certainly once a man begins to neglect his
domestic duties he becomes painfully effeminate, does he not?"
Who is the speaker? How is this passage subversive of Victorian gender
hierarchy?
2. "LADY BRACKNELL. I'm sorry if we are a little late, Algernon, but I was
obliged to call on dear Lady Harbury. I hadn't been there since her poor
husband's death. I never saw a woman so altered; she looks quite twenty
years younger."
What is reveald about the change in the man-woman relationship and the
role of women in this passage?
3. "Again the guns disturbed the hour,
Roarding their readiness to avenge,
As far inland as Stourton Tower,
And Camelot, and starlit Stonehenge."
Explain the significance of the three place names.

How do these two lines express Hopkin's optimism? What is the nature
of his optimism; that is to say, on what is his optism based?

Why is the word "wonder" a pun? What quality does the speaker emphasize
in choosing the images of "sillion" and "embers"? With what is the speaker
connecting the quality?
6. "For Christ plays in ten thousand places,
Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
To the Father through the features of men's faces."
What thology is expressed by means of these lines from Hopkins'
"As Kingfishers Catch Fire"? In order to substantiate this theological
belief, what techniques can be found which Hopkins emplys in his

5. Discuss either one of the two poets' modernity: Hardy and Hopkins. Approach
this question from at least two perspectives: stylistics and subject matter.
6. Examine Hardy's and Hopkins's poetics in relation to their time context.
