Bainbirdge's mass spectrometer, shown in Fig. 28-58,separates ions having the
same velocity. The ions, after entering through a velocity selevetor composed
of an elevtric field produced by the charged plates P and P', and a magnetic
field B perpendicular to the electric field and the ion path. The ions that
then pass undeviated through the crossed E and B fields enter into a region
where a second magnetic field B' exists, where they are made to follow
circular paths. A photographic plate (or a modern detector) registers their
arrival. Show that, for the ions, q/m = E/rBB' , where r is the radius of the
circular orbit.
2a.
What is the excess charge on aconducting sphere of radius r = 0.15 m if the
potential of the sphere is 1500V and V = 0 at infinity?
2b.
Two metal spheres, each of radius 3.0 cm, have a center-to-center separation
of 2.0 m. Sphere 1 charge 1.0×10^(-8) C; sphere 2 has charge -3.0×10^(-8)
C. Assume that the separation is large enough for us to assume that the
charge on each sphere is uniformly distributed ( the spheres di nit affcet
each other). With V =0 at infinity, calculate (a)the potential at the point
halfway between the centers and the potential on the surface of (b)sphere 1
and (c)sphere 2.

Figure 27-39 shows fice 5.00(歐姆) resistors . Find the equivalent resistance
between points (a) F and H and (b) F and G. (Hint:For each pair of points,
imagine that abattery is connected across the pair.)
4.
Figure 22-18 shows the deflecting plates of an ink-jet printer, with
superimposed coordinate axes. An ink drop with a mass m of 1.3×10^(-10) kg
and a negative charge of magnitude Q = 1.5×10^(-13) C enters the region
between the plates, initally moving along the x axis with speed Vx = 18 m/s.
The length L of each plate is 1.6 cm. The plates are charged and thus produce
an electic field at all points between them. Assume that field E is downward
directed, is uniform, and has a magnitude of 1.4×10^6 N/C. What is the
vertical deflection of the drop at the far edge of the plates? (The
gravitational force on the drop is small relative to the electrostatic force
actiong on the drop and can be neglected.)
