When Ax=Ay=2Az , how many degenerate states there are for each of the first 5
lowest energy states? What are them?
2 the electronic configurations of Cu , Cu+, Cu2+ are as following. Write
down the term symbol for each one. Cu: [Ar]4s2(3d9) or [Ar]4s1(3d10) ,
Cu+:[Ar]4s1(3d9) or[Ar]4s0(3d10) ; Cu2+ : [Ar]4s0(3d9)
3.why C3 and C32 are in the same class in C3v but not C3h ? Number of class
in C3v and C3h is 3and 6 respectively. Are there any subgroup existing in
each of these point group? If so,what are they?
4. Write down the Lewis structure ; predict the molecular shape using the
VSEPR and then give the point group that each of the following molecule
belongs to? SF4 , XeF4,cis-and trans-PF3Cl2, NSF3, B2H6
5. determine the point group for each of following sketch or molecule.
a. (ReCl4)2 b. Li4(CH3)4 c.B3N3H6 d.F3SCCF3
6.(NSCl2)- and OSCl2 are iso-electronic ,compare their geometries. Work out
all the possible stretching vibration modes for the molecule.
7. work out the character table for C2v and C2h , then apply to C-N and Pt-Cl
stretching , vibration mode for cis- and trans-[PtCl2(CN)2]2- respectively.
Compare this with C-O and Ni-C stretching of Ni(CO)4
8. Why there is only doubly degenerate irreducible representation in all
Cn,Cnv,Cnh or Dn,Dnv,Dnh groups , but triply degeneracy does exists in T or O
groups?
