1 Assign the orbital symmetries of C-H σ-bonds in CH4 and CH2Cl2 respectively
find the orbital correlation between the two. What are the respective C-H,C-Cl
stretching modes.

2 Describe all the symmetry elements in point group C4V and D3h.

3 Five-coordinated metal complexs, ML5, are often found in square pyramid or
in trigonal bipyramid; compare the d-orbital splitting of the metal in these
two geometries; discuss the relative stability for d^n n=4~8. Describe the
molecule orbital(σandπbonds) in each geometry.

4 Describe the possible π and δ bonds in metal-metal bond; Why the bond
order of Re2Cl8(2-) (D4h) and Os2Cl8(2-) (D4d) is 4 and 3 respectively

5 Explain why ligand field strength is in the order: CO > OH2 > F-? interpret
the order in terms of M-L σ and π bonds.

6 Why there is strong Jahn-Teller distortion for d9; high spin d4 and low spin
d7 system in Oh geometry.

7 Give the point group for each following species:

 cis-PtCl2(NH2)2   trans-PtCl2(NH2)2   1,4-dichlorobenzene   SF4   XeF4   O2H2

 C6H6Cr(CO)3   ethane(C2H6)   ethylene(C2H4)   acetylene(C2H2)   urea (NH2)2CO
