1.A length of copper wire carries a current of 10 A uniformly distributed
through its cross section. Calculate the energy density of (a) the magnetic
field and (b) the electric field at the surface of the wire. The diameter is
2.5 mm, and its resistance per unit length is 3.3 Ω/km.
2.An RLC series circuit has a 1.0 KΩ resister, a 100 mH inductor, and a 25 nF
capacitor. Find the circuit's impedance at 120 Hz. Find the average power at
the circuit's resonant frequency with a 10 V RMS voltage source.
3.Write down the Maxwell's equations and the related physical meaning for each
equations.
4.An airplane flying at a distance of 10 km from a radio transmitter receives
a signal of intensity 10 μW/m^2. Calulate (a) the amplitude of the electric
field at the airplane due to this signal, (b) the total power of the
transmitter, assuming the transmitter to radiate uniformly in all directions.
5.Suppose that one of the slits of a double-slit arrangement is wider than the
other, so that the amplitude of the light reaching the central part of the
screen from one slit, acting alone, is twice that from the other slit, acting
alone. Derive an expression for the light intensity I at the screen in
terms of the angle (θ) to the central axis, the slit spacing (d) and the
wave length (λ).
6.Explain the reasions that we can see interference patterns from thin films.
7.(a) What is the angular separation of two stars if their images are barely
resolved by the Thaw refracting telescope at the Allegheny Observatory in
Pittsburgh? The lens diameter is 76 cm and its focal length is 14 m. Assume
λ = 550 nm. (b) Find the distance between these barely resolved stars if
each of them is 10 light-years distance from Earth.
8.A diffraction grating illuminated by monochromatic light normal to the
grating produces a certain line at angle θ. Derive its half-width assuming
the grating has N slits with spacing d and the wave length is λ.
9.Use Bohr's assumption to derive the binding energies of the electron in a
hydrogen atom.
10. Describe the basic set-up and findings of the following two experimentts:
(a) Compton Scattering (b) Stern- Gerlach experiment.
