3.How, ask Hobbes, can the state of nature be overcome?His answer
is that everyone will agree that it is in their individual
self-interests to protect thenselves from the nasty and violent
behavior of others. To gain this protection, Hobbes claims,
everyone will give up certain individual freedoms to a powerful authority
that all must obey. This powerful authority has the right to
establish rules and laws that protect everyone and also has the right
to use whatever means are necessary, including force, to ensure
compliance with the rules. This prowerful authority is a government.
And the agreement to allow such a government to rule is called
the social contract.
