Please answer the following three questions in either Chinese or English with
exact replies in accordance with the contents we have discussed in the
classes. All three qestions count each 35 points and in total, they count 100
points.
1. Read the following paragraph excerpted from the p.26 of "The Refutation of
Idealism" by G. E. Moore and briefly answer the following questions.
"The trivial proposition which I propose to dispute is this: That esse is
percipi. This is a very ambiguous proposition, but, in some sense or other, it
has been very widely held. That it is, in some sense, essential to Idealism,
I must for the present merely assume. What I propose to show is that, in all
the senses ever given to it, it is false."
Why is that esse is percipi 'essential' to Idealism?
With the answer of previous question in mind, how did Moore refute Idealism?
Did Moore successfully achieve his objective of refuting Idealism?
2. Read the following paragraph excerpted from the p.31 of "Logiacl Atomism"
by B. Russell and briefly answer the following questions.
"I hold that logic is what is fundamental in philosophy, and that schools be
characterized rather by their metaphysic. My own logic is atomic, and it is
this aspect upon which I should wish to lay stress. Therefore, I prefer to
describe my philosophy as "Idealism," whether with or without some prefixed
adjective."
Why would Russell consider that his 'logical atomism' might be considered
also a sort of 'realism'?
In what sense would Russell think that the construction of logical system
can demonstrate 'reality' as something outside of our mind?
3. Please explain "Russell's Paradox" by referring to an example. And then,
further illustrate the solution which Russell offered to dissolve the
paradox. Finally, please also add your personal views concerning whether
you agree with his solution or not?
