Originally part of the League of Nations, ILO is now a specialized agency of the United Nations (see separate entry) and has over 170 member countries. ILO activities involve setting international labor standards, providing vocational and management training, and researching workplace issues, such as women's rights and the freedom to organize. DC interns work in Marketing and Publications, Technical Information/Library, and Recruitment (i.e. Personnel). Geneva interns work in over 40 branches, including Labor Law & Relations, Freedom of Association, Equality of Rights, Employment Strategies, Active Labor Markets Policies, and International Migration for Employment. NY interns (two to five per year) assist staff with research and cover meetings at the UN. Attendance welcome at UN meetings, IMF and World Bank seminars; intern acknowledgment in ILO newsletters. ILO started its internship program in 1975 . . . Intern duties may include: editing speeches, writing articles for newsletters, compiling fact sheets on labor laws, and updating mailing lists. Requirements: -at least 20 years old and not more than 35 years in order to be accepted onto the programme; -be an under-graduate, graduate or post-graduate student -have an excellent track record which is demonstrated by recent certificates from University or other Institutions; -be proficient (written and spoken) in at least one of the ILO’s working languages (English, French and Spanish), as they will be working in an international environment; -have the ability to adapt to an international working environment and maintain good working relations as well as respect for diversity in cultural backgrounds; -strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; -additional consideration will be given for any past work experience; -a knowledge of computer packages would be an advantage (e.g. Wordperfect, Word, Power Point, Excel). Fields of Interest: Students undertaking advanced studies in a technical field of interest to the ILO such as employment, economics and statistics; labour law and labour relations, social security and conditions of work, management development, small industry development, occupational safety and health, vocational rehabilitation, vocational training, gender and development studies, elimination of child labour, social protection, information technology, human resources, financial and budget studies. For internships outside ILO Geneva, applications should be sent directly to the ILO Regional Office.
