Founded in 1915 by two women who later won Nobel Peace Prizes, the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) is the world's oldest international women's organization, promoting political rather than military solutions to conflicts. Focusing on the impact of disarmament, environmentally sustainable development, racism, and human rights policies on women, WILPF publishes informational brochures and journals as well as collaborates with the UN agencies ECOSOC, UNCTAD, UNESCO, FAO, ILO, and
UNICEF. Interns in NY and Geneva monitor UN meetings and briefings, prepare oral and written reports, and assist with administrative tasks. PA interns work in Publications (as editorial assistants for Peace and Freedom), Program, Fundraising, Membership, and Resources.
Attendance welcome at WILPF press conferences; attendance at United Nations and NGO meetings; geographically diverse group of interns in Geneva (one from US, two from overseas).
WILPF launched its New York and Geneva internship programs in 1985 and 1981, respectively.

Jeannette Rankin Internship Program
The Legislative Office WILPF in Washington, the legislative office of the US Section of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom,provides inform-ation, educational materials and organizing connections for the grassroots work of WILPF's 10,000 members across the United States. We work in coalition with other disarmament, women's human rights, racial and economic justice organizations to translate women's experience and vision into new policies to promote peace and justice. Our work for the
years 2000-2002 is centered around three campaigns: Dismantling the War Economy, Challenging Corporate Power, and Uniting for Racial Justice.
Job Description
Responsibilities: researching issues, tracking legislation, attending coalition meetings, briefings and hearings, writing short articles, updates and alerts, keeping e-mail list postings current, producing resource materials, filling requests for information, performing general office tasks and staffing the office as needed.
Qualifications: excellent communications, interpersonal, and computer skills; academic work in international affairs, politics, women's studies, or other relevant area; work experience or demonstrated interest in peace, economic justice or gender issues; ability to work independently. Organizing experience, strong internet skills and database proficiency desirable.
Jeannette Rankin internships are for 12 weeks, 20 hours per week, starting in September, January and May. Interns receive a small stipend.
Credit may be available through your school. Work study students welcome.

United Nations Intern
The Director of the WILPF UN Office in New York offers an internship opportunity to individuals who have an interest in international affairs, are committed to social and economic change, and are dedicated to working for peace and justice. This internship provides individuals with an opportunity to work within the United Nations system and with the NGO community. A willingness to work as part of a team, a sensitivity to women's issues, and a strong commitment to world peace are essential.
The internship is available for women only in recognition of their being notably excluded from positions concerned with questions of foreign policy and international relations.
At this time there is no stipend attached to the internship. A term may vary in length from three to eight months. Hours are flexible, but there is a minimum weekly commitment requirement of twelve hours.
Job Description
The intern will be responsible for:
1.attending UN meetings, briefings, conferences, and parallel NGO committee meetings; 2.preparing written and oral reports 3.light administrative assistant work: correspondence, typing, filing, answering telephone calls.
Desired Skills

International Internship
An intern in our Geneva, Switzerland, office will learn the ropes of lobbying and participating in U.N. conferences. She will choose an internship from one of three concentrations: Disarmament, Development, and Human Rights.
Internship in Disarmament
This programme focuses on the work of the UN and NGOs in promoting and strengthening efforts for disarmament and the peaceful settlement of conflict. This intern follows the Conference on Disarmament and other disarmament-related activities of the United Nations and NGOs. She reports on developments, alerts WILPF to events and new publications, and proposes actions for WILPF to take. She also takes part in and helps organize the activities of WILPF and those organized jointly by non-governmental
organizations.
Internship in Development
This programme focuses on the work of the UN, related agencies, WILPF, and other NGOs with regards to development and North/South relations. This intern follows the meetings of the United Nations, in particular those of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and other meetings concerned with issues of development and environment. She reports on developments, alerts WILPF to events and new publications, and proposes actions for WILPF to take. She also takes part in and helps organize the
activities of WILPF and those organized jointly by non-governmental organizations.
Internship in Human Rights
This programme focuses on the work of the UN, WILPF, and NGOs to advance human rights in economic, social, cultural, civil, and political spheres. This intern follows the annual session of the UN Commission on Human Rights and its Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, as well as the meetings of their working groups and committees dealing with specific aspects of human rights. She reports on developments, alerts WILPF to events and new publications, and proposes
actions for WILPF to take. She also takes part in, and helps organize the activites of WILPF and those organized jointly by non-governmental organizations.

Resume indicating education, relevant past activities, and experience.
A 1000-1500 word essay giving reasons for wanting to follow the programme, and ideas on how the experience would be useful for future work.
Two recommendations from non-family members. Persons writing recommendations should indicate their relationship to the applicant and evaluate the candidate according to:
her ability to take initiative in developing activities;
her skills in written and oral communication and her fluency in English;
her long-term committment to working for peace and justice; and
her maturity in dealing with others.

The internship begins in mid-January, ending in mid-December. The interns will reside in Geneva. The programme focuses on work undertaken by the United Nations (UN), WILPF, and the community of non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Applicants will be informed by mid-June whether or not they have been short-listed. The final selection will be made by August 15th of the year in which they apply.
Conditions:
WILPF pays for the intern's round-trip travel from her home to Geneva. WILPF provides housing and pays a small stipend to cover basic living expenses. Health insurance and all other health related expenses, as well as all other insurances, except accident insurance, are the intern's own responsibility.
