As people prepared for sleep, darkness lay on 陽明山.
Our way to 擎天崗 wound along the floor of the hollow,
and round the green feet of a steep hill into another deeper
and broader valley, and then over the shoulder of further hills,
and down into new valleys.
Poor 學弟 pushed the motorcycle and hastened up the last slope,
standing breathless beside 宗伯. "It's most unfair," said 學弟.
'I had been chosen as 宗伯's companion by drawing out the key.'
The moon was rising from the mountains, and the shadows were deepening
in the woods, when we went on again. Our paths now went into thickets
where the dusk had already gathered.
Night came beneath the path as we walked,
and some people uncovered their flash light.
Suddenly we came out into the open and found ourselves under
a pale evening sky picked by a few stars.
There was a wide treeless space before us,
running in a great circle and bending away on either hand.
Red and gold and silver stars!
There was no water nor any visible cows:
it was a country of grass and short springy turf.
As we climbed a ridge the breeze seemed to have grown more.
Our bed was of grass, soft and strangely wet.
We were sitting on the grass near the edge of the hill.
I was standing studying the sky and weather and then lay flat,
stretched upon my back, gazing into the darkness, south and north.
There was no sign of the summer constellations because of the big moon.
To the west the outflung arm of the hills marched to a sudden end,
and far lands could be descried beyond them, wide and vague.
We should go back before the day was board.
It was near dawn, and the grey light was again waning fast,
when we halted for the sunrise.
But we were very weary. The mountains were veiled in deepening
dusk, and the wind was cold. Cold air blew on my faces.
My very bones are chilled.
Night is drawing to an end, and the full moon is setting.
We came back to NTU.
