這是一個外國朋友看完後的心得~~~ :)
After I said that I would no longer write reviews on the NTU singing performances, because I had nothing new to say, I found myself wanting to comment on some of the things I saw last Friday.
I liked the variety and richness of the repertoire which for me is the most enjoyable of all their concerts. However, when the girls came on stage, I was so shocked at their mini capes. The front was OK but the back was appalling. The scarves looked like mini capes of the super heroes. They also looked like somebody had stapled them together at the back. It would have looked better had the scarves been folded into rectangulars and just be put on one of the shoulders or be used as bandanas because
they were big enough. Enough said about appearances. When the first female and male soloists sang, I was disappointed because surely, there must be better singers than them; however, as more soloists came to the front, I realized that each one must have been selected for a particular aria, that perhaps their voice was suited to a particular piece, for no two soloists had the same voice quality. The first male soloist looked so rigid that I thought he would faint from nervousness! I particularly
enjoyed the pretty soloist with big eyes, right after the first two soloists, because she was the ultimate performer. Her voice also had a pretty wide range. One of the last female soloists had a powerful voice and beautiful high notes. Even if each had a particular voice quality, their blending was perfect and so pleasant to the ears. This was the best soprano group I have seen for NTU choir. The male and female singers complement one another quite well.
The group should sing more arias from popular operas like Cavaleria Rusticana, Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, etc., because they could do these so well, the singing as well as the mood of each aria. Also, very few groups in Taiwan can actually pronounce English or foreign languages as well as the NTU group. The body language and arrangement of the group were also very good - ah, the openness and freshness of youth!
For Waltzing Matilda, it was very clever that they used various methods of singing the first few lines to provide a contrast to the succeeding lines. The first few lines were sung in a comical manner, where the singers used the first area of voice projection, rather than the 3rd area which is the ideal way to project voices. If you don’t know what I am talking about, there are 3 areas where one projects one’s voice - the first area which is in the mouth (least desirable), the second, near the nose,
and the third, all the way back, close to the jaw, which is the most desirable. Yawn (comes from the 3rd area) and you will know what I mean.
I also enjoyed the last part of the program where obscure Taiwanese and Hakka songs/practices (of the dead) were introduced and this time, the narrator was quite essential to express nostalgia for our salad days.
I must say this is the most enjoyable NTU concert I have the fortune to see.
