"INTRODUCTORY PLANETARY SCIENCE"
(Do not discuss with anyone. Due in the next class on 11/12)
1.Fig. 1.8 is for a universe that expands at a constant rate. How should it be
modified for a universe that expands at a decreasing rate? How about one
that expands at an increasing rate?
2.Why was the big bang unable to make nuclei heavier than 7 amu? How did stars
overcome this problem?
3.Why do we need neutrons to make most of the nuclei beyond iron? Where do
these neutron come from?
4.Classify Ba isotopes according to the r-, s-, and p-process scheme. Make a
plot similar to Fig. 2-14 for isobars at 138 amu. (the nuclear data you need
can be found by searching the web for "chart of nuclides")
5.Astronomers no longer believe the disc around the star Beta Pictoris is a
planet-forming proto-stellar nebula. Why? What seems to be the nature of
this type of disc?
6.Why are meteorites better recorders for early solar system events than rocks
on earth? Why are achondrites believed to have formed after the formation of
the earliest chonrites?
7.Why do we think that the earth formed at temperature around 1000C? What is
the implication of this for the origin of life on earth?
