In general I agree, there isn't any standard you can set to say who has been
the strongest player ever in the world. In modern times there were almost no
single players as outstanding that they dominated Go.
That's why I wrote Honinbo Shusaku or Dosaku who were the undisputed champions
in their time.
But when talking about this century, names have to be discussed in couples as
there were mostly 2 stronger players:
Go Sei-gen + Kitani Minoru
Takagawa Shukaku + Sakata Eio
Cho Chikun + Kobayashi koichi
Nie Weiping + Ma Xiao-Chun
Although in recent years one sees that Lee Chang-Ho is winning a lot, it's
just a pity that he doesn't play in Japan.
Japanese players just don't pay too much attention to international contests.
A single contest can hardly decide the question.
However,
I know that taiwanese players have a heart for Rin Kai-Ho. But unfortunately
he was never good enough to be named here....
Go Seigen + Cho Chikun are still the most successful foreign players in Japan.
