By Marc Narducci Inquirer Staff Writer Though he didn't have the smoothest of beginnings with the 76ers, Chris Webber is looking forward to his first full season with the team. There certainly were some good moments, but also many frustrating ones in a difficult transition for the five-time all-star after he was traded by Sacramento in a six-player deal in February. With the Sixers, Webber averaged 15.6 points and 7.9 rebounds after having averaged 21.3 points and 9.7 boards earlier in the season with the Kings. In the five-game playoff series against Detroit, he averaged 19 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 41.1 percent from the field. Webber, 32, at times looked out of place with the Sixers, raising questions about his surgically repaired left knee and whether it would hold up through the final three years and $62 million of his contract. "My knee feels great, and before February, nobody was saying anything about the knee," Webber said yesterday in a phone interview from his native Detroit, where he was collecting goods and money for victims of Hurricane Katrina. "The knee felt fine." Although Webber won't say it, he wasn't happy with his role in the offense employed by former coach Jim O'Brien. Often used at the high post, the 6-foot-10 245-pounder in effect became a jump-shooter for the Sixers. He shot just 39.1 percent from the field in 21 regular-season games. "Everybody says that I don't want to play in the low post, but that's not true," said Webber, who is getting ready for his 13th NBA season. Webber will enter the season without legal issues hanging over his head. On Aug. 31, Webber was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine nearly two years after pleading guilty in Detroit to a federal criminal-contempt charge in the University of Michigan booster scandal. U.S. District Court Judge Nancy G. Edmunds ruled that Webber's conviction should be treated as one for a misdemeanor rather than one for a felony. Webber had completed 330 hours of community service and paid out-of-pocket expenses of more than $78,000. Webber, who had pleaded guilty to avoid the prospect of jail, maintains his innocence. "I never got $300,000 to attend Michigan," he said, denying a common allegation. "I'm just happy that I can now look ahead." And that means to his first training camp with the Sixers, which will begin on Oct. 4 at Duke University in Durham, N.C. One thing Webber would be able to do without there is the constant speculation that he and Allen Iverson won't be able to mesh. Because of his passing ability, Webber is more effective when he gets frequent touches. Iverson is used to handling the ball most of the time. Both players appear a little annoyed that people continue to ask whether they can click. "I don't see any problems with us," Iverson said last week. Webber agreed. "For us to be a contender, Allen and I have to play well together - and we will," he said. Webber hasn't met with Mo Cheeks, the Sixers' new coach, but says he is excited about playing for him. "I respect Mo Cheeks and all he has accomplished," Webber said. Over the weekend, Webber spearheaded a drive to help hurricane victims. He and volunteers collected school supplies, food, clothes and money for displaced students and loaded three trucks with those things. He and his foundation are paying the cost of sending the trucks to Houston, San Antonio, and Jackson, Miss. "We had such a great response this weekend, both in people giving us items and in volunteers," he said, noting that there were about 150 volunteers. Webber said he has been uplifted by people's willingness to reach out to the victims. "Those people have gone though so much," he said. "It has been gratifying to see how many people have wanted to help others in need." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 210.85.0.93
