Scarborough Fair的曲調源自英國傳統民謠，三拍子計24小節，作者不詳。而嵌入之
Canticle則不復見小山腰(The Side Of a Hill)原曲的旋律，而化為Scarborough Fair的
和聲。
Scarborough是英格蘭東北部的濱海城市。十二、三世紀時此地擁有通商
特權，每年八月十五日開始長達四十五天的商展吸引全英甚至歐洲大陸的
商人前來買賣，盛極一時。十八世紀時商展復興過一段時間，但競爭的
城鎮已眾，終於在1788年劃下句點。雖然確有史卡柏羅(Scarborough)這個城鎮，但仍可
以拆字方式來了解其絃外之音。Scarborough可拆為Scar(傷痕)與borough(自治區)二字，
其意為傷心小鎮(傷心欸所在)，當初史卡柏羅的命名是否有此典故，頗堪玩味。
歌詞字面上看是男歌者要聽眾告訴舊情人達成一些不可能的任務就可回
到他身邊，但本曲版本繁多，亦有對唱、互出難題者。有云Scarborough
Fair可能取材自十七世紀的蘇格蘭民謠The Elfin Knight，其中愛慕而綁
架少女的精靈威脅她完成難題才放人，少女也以其人之道還治其身。
著名的副歌parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme十九世紀才出現，涵義
不詳，可能是其他民謠歌詞的訛傳。parsley（荷蘭芹）、sage（鼠尾草）、
rosemary（迷迭香）、thyme（百里香）都是薄荷科的香草，擺在一起並
非偶然，也激發一些象徵學討論，分別代表愛情的甜蜜、力量、忠誠和勇氣。孰是孰非見
仁見智。
本首曲式可以算是ABA型，開始和結尾(A)使用齊唱的方式，B和A旋律相同，指不過B段加
入Canticle做為和聲，反覆三次(即歌詞提到三個不可能任務)再回到A段齊唱結束。每段
第一句使用自然三度的和弦(Do Mi Sol)，自然三度和弦會讓人有舒服的感覺(甚至像是在
夢幻中的天堂一般)。第二句唱到四種香草「Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme」時
，則使用了多利安調式(Dorian mode)的小三度和弦，引領出悲傷及渴望愛情的的感覺。
