International Applicants
International applicants whose native language is not English must score a
minimum of 550 on the written Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
and 215 on the computer-based version of the same exam. Applicants should
arrange to take the examination in their home country by contacting the
Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6161, Princeton, NJ 08540-6151. The
date of this test may be no more than two years from the intended quarter
of admission.
International students cannot establish California residency and should
expect to pay nonresident tuition every quarter in addition to all other
assessed fees. As an international applicant you will be responsible for
payment of these fees as graduate student stipends are sufficient to cover
living expenses or tuition but not both.
Total required fees and expenses are estimated at US$23,000 per calendar year.
This amount is for the student alone. This estimate includes $13,860 for fees
for three quarters and $9,140 for basic living expenses, books, and other
school supplies. Married students must verify an additional US$3,500 if
accompanied by a spouse and another US $2,400 for a child; each additional
dependent requires US$1,200. Opportunities for employment are limited. The
University will not issue a certificate of eligibility to you unless you
provide the Graduate Division with evidence of your ability to pay all required
fees and expenses for the duration of your program. In some cases, American
embassies and consulates will not grant you a student visa unless you can
provide proof of adequate funding for the entire stay.
